What is Nations?
Started in 2021, Nations is a ministry created to stimulate and strengthen ethnically diverse and diaspora churches in Edinburgh.
We want to promote integration between these churches and fellowship groups with the wider church community in the city, championing the diversity of the church and also seeking to build a sense of unity in The Kingdom.
We do this in various ways:
A Place at the Table – a series of meetings open to all our partners and volunteers to learn from and listen to the experiences of Christians who are black or of other ethnicities, building relationships and supporting congregations and fellowship groups from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Acts 2:11 Edinburgh – which connects people with foreign-language Christians and Christian fellowship groups.
A Place at the Table
We created a series of meetings open to all our partners and volunteers. Its purpose is for us all to develop a better understanding of the experiences of Christians who are black, or of other ethnicities, by listening and learning. The meetings have all been held on Zoom from 1pm-2pm on a Friday every two-or-so months, and this coming year Rev. Andy Longwe will take on the role of hosting the interviews.
Look out on our social media for updates on when the next A Place at the Table will be taking place.
We decided to create this space in response to murder of George Floyd on 25th May 2020, recognising that although there have been many racially motivated murders of black and other ethnic minority people in different countries, including our own, this particular murder had a global impact. The City Mission team felt the need of engaging further in the issues that have surfaced. We have been since, reflecting on racism, how we relate to people of other ethnicities and how it affects our work in Edinburgh.
We were delighted to have Dr Krish Kandiah join us in November 2021. Krish is a social entrepreneur, writer and speaker, founder of Home for Good who has been facilitating conversations around race and faith around the UK.
In April 2022 we are welcoming Barbara Henderson as part of our relaunch of A Place at the Table, newly led by Andy Longwe and our Mission Strengthener Màiri MacPherson.

Acts 2:11
“Acts 2:11 Edinburgh” is a project to support foreign-language Christians and Christian fellowship groups in Edinburgh. It was initiated by a local pastor who passed it over to Nations in May 2021.
These are some ways you can get involved. If you are interested in knowing more about any of the following things, just click the link below or email maria@edinburghcitymission.org.uk
- You might be a native speaker of a language and be a contact for responding to enquiries from interested people.
- You might have acquaintances who might benefit from speaking to someone in their own language, or attending a fellowship group.
- Even better, you might be interested in starting up a new group in your native language with a view to reaching out to those who have not heard the gospel, or would benefit from native language fellowship & teaching.
- Maybe the only Christians and churches you know are majority-culture English-speaking. You could benefit from getting to know your brothers and sisters in Christ by partnering with and serving churches from a minority ethnic background.
We want to start a relationship with churches that disciple people from diverse ethnic backgrounds. We want to champion and strengthen their mission in Edinburgh.
If you are part of one of these churches and would like to hear more about this project, please contact us.

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.
